Lloyd Hughes, creative director of male grooming brand Men-U, has been working in the male hair and grooming industry for more than 30 years. These are answers to the most popular questions he is asked in salon...
Q: Can you make my hair look thicker? A: “First and foremost, find a stylist or barber with the knowledge to give you the correct advice and the right skills to deliver the best cut. The correct product knowledge is also essential. Speak to your hair stylist about a strong, tall, lean and masculine cut with a square shape. This will take the focus away from the lack of density in the upper regions.

This directs attention to the hairstyle as a whole, not just on the less than full area from the crown to the front.
“Keep your top layers at no more than three inches in length to keep in line with the strong masculine shape created through the sides, to prevent the hair becoming see-through at the ends. Ask your stylist to slightly over direct the front, to soften the recession areas.
“Subtlety is key here – we don’t want that 80s flick fringe back again. Beware the thinning scissors. If the hairdresser pulls those out, run.”
Q: Can product help thinning hair? A: “The wrong product choice can make your hair become transparent. You don’t want an effect that separates each strand as this creates a direct view to the scalp and an altogether non-flattering view. Products such as traditional pomades will weigh the hair down and flatten to your head, again exposing more scalp. Invest time in finding a professional product range.
