New superstore ‘vital for economy’
GMI Holbeck claimed Ryedale District Council’s decision to back the superstore plans on the Wentworth Street car park in Malton will help attract other major retailers. The Yorkshire Post revealed on Wednesday that the Fitzwilliam Estate, which has owned much of Malton’s centre for the past 300 years, had launched an appeal against the council’s decision to oppose its own plans to redevelop the town’s livestock market. The estate had put forward plans for a smaller food store, but the council rejected the proposals on March 29. The appeal has been lodged with the Planning Inspectorate and a public inquiry is now due to be held. A GMI Holbeck spokeswoman stressed 10 out of 15 members of the council’s planning committee had backed the Wentworth Street project, and added: “Ryedale and Malton need more big names as well as their lovely independent stores - the council’s planning committee understands that local priority.”
