Big Beast roars
This is no bad thing. The remarks by the so-called Big Beast that it would be "folly" to rule out tax increases alongside cuts in public spending have done everyone a favour.
The whole debate over Government expenditure has been filled with hints and "aspirations" and too few firm commitments. Critics have been crying out for more honesty from politicians, and now they have got it. Mr Clarke has reflected the dire state of Britain's finances and, even if voters disagree with him, now they know where the Conservatives stand.
