Why we must ban forced or arranged marriages – Yorkshire Post Letters
THE report about forced marriages, particularly within the South Asian community, made for disturbing reading (The Yorkshire Post, January 2).
Why on earth anyone would want to dismiss this as a cultural issue is hugely concerning.

We also need to be looking at so-called arranged marriages which, I suspect, are also often forced marriages in one way or another. These, in my view, also need to be banned.
This is all a child protection issue, and the way in which so many young girls are taken abroad, only to marry someone they have never seen, beggars belief. There have to be far more stringent checks on this sort of thing, and more prohibitions on who is allowed into the country through marriage.
We need to bite the bullet, ignore any racism shouts, and try to do away with such Third World practices once and for all. And this must also include arranged marriages as well.
