Wartime’s women heroes celebrated at Museum
The Yorkshire Museum of Farming in Murton, near York, has received £60,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the initiative, called Feeding the Nation: A Celebration of the Women’s Land Army.
The museum hopes the project will raise awareness of the vital role the Women’s Land Army (WLA) played during the two World Wars and will include a new exhibition showcasing items from the museum’s collection.

Hide AdMuseum curator Esther Graham, said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and are confident the project will enlighten, entertain and provide insight into an often overlooked aspect of the nation’s war efforts.”
During the next year, volunteers and local people will be urged to get involved in workshops and activities based at the museum and at venues around York.
The cash will also pay for an opportunity to display many items from the museum’s WLA collection in the new exhibition space – most of which have never before been seen in public.
