Hide AdForest have been unable to tie Chambers down amid their recent search for new owners and his status as a free agent has allowed several clubs – among them Ipswich Town – to set their sights on the 26-year-old.
Ipswich are thought to be at the front of the queue to sign the centre-back, who has made more than 200 appearances for Forest.
Paul Jewell is expected to attempt to force the transfer through in the next seven days.
Chambers’ contract at the City Ground ended at midnight on Saturday.

United manager Neil Warnock has already signed one centre-back this summer, landing Jason Pearce in a £500,000 deal from Portsmouth and he gave youngster Tom Lees a firm vote of confidence by handing the 21-year-old a new, long-term contract last month.
Meanwhile, Norwich City are being linked with a move for Barnsley’s creative midfielder Jacob Butterfield.
Butterfield’s contract expires on Monday and Premier League Norwich are expected to make a move for the 22-year-old Bradford-born midfielder.
