Crosland Heath’s Collier digs deep to hold off Towers in Meltham Trophy
The 36-hole stroke play competition attracted a field of 98, including 38 visitors from 14 different clubs.
The course had been prepared to an exceptional standard, with pin positions chosen to provide a substantial challenge for the district’s best golfers.

Hide AdThere were some impressive morning scores with Tony Hellawell, a member of Meltham, posting what proved to be the lowest round of the day with a 66 net off 13 handicap.
In the afternoon the wind gathered in strength, making for an even sterner test.
Three-handicapper Chris Mear, a familiar face at Meltham who is now a member at Halifax, showed he had not forgotten his way round the course and carded the best gross score over the two rounds with a five-over 148.
Collier, playing off four, found his 138 aggregate enough to give him a slender one-shot win from Meltham’s Ian Towers, a 10-handicapper.
