He scored a net 68 on Saturday to earn a place among the top 60 who went through to Sunday's action, when he added a net 64.
Low those his scores were, he only edged Robert Fotheringham (62 71) into second place by a single shot.

Philip Shaw (72 69) won the seniors' prize and Alex Byran (65 76) the juniors' accolade.
Best first-day score was a 62 from Paul Carter while Paul Radcliffe took the second-day honours with a 69 on count back.
Captain James Crowther was pleased the weather held for the two days' play although the presentation, which was to have taken place in the club's courtyard, was moved to the 'smoke room' as rain finally set in.
The scores rose on day two when head greenkeeper and course manager Chris Dyson chose more difficult pin positions to concentrate the qualifiers' minds.
